Secular Celebrant - My Journey
After a mixed career that included being a soldier, a policeman, a professional actor and stand-up comedian, life took a small turn. How this happened was largely by accident. I, together with my brother and sisters, performed my Mother's funeral service, following which, the Funeral Director (who was a personal friend) asked if I would be available for other services. I thanked him for the offer but politely declined his outlandish suggestion. Well, that was over 14 years and approximately 1,500 services ago. Since then I have assisted more families in the South East region than I can count. For many of these families, it has been my huge honour to have performed multiple services.
My work as a secular celebrant has always been and continues to be something in which I take great satisfaction and pride. It is a privilege to be involved with families at this difficult time and to receive their trust and confidence. I have been included in family conversations and discussions where I have heard incredible and touching stories and memories. Some of them hugely sad, many inspiring and invariably including others that were hilariously funny and warm. These, of course, I would never discuss outside of the family circle concerned, however, as they say, "one day I must write a (very discreet!) book".
I am often asked where I stand on religion. So, in order to avoid any confusion, I include here a brief outline. I have no personal faith, however, I am very aware that within the families for whom I work there may well be differing religious or spiritual perspectives and beliefs, I am happy to incorporate religious music or readings in a service. However, should you require any form of faith based sermon, it would be wrong of me to 'pretend' to posses a faith as well as being disrespectful towards those who genuinely hold such views. Nevertheless, I have, on many occasions, performed services in tandem with various clergy or family members who wish to mark the occasion in accordance with their own individual beliefs. My personal favourite was a service conducted (due to an intriguing mix of family members!) as a 'team effort' by myself, a Roman Catholic priest, an Orthodox Jewish Rabbi and a Sikh Granthi. It sounds a perfect recipe for chaos! However, it was a truly joyous experience and, most importantly, one that the family were delighted with.
Some comments from families.
"Richard's obvious experience and skills helped to make a day that we were all dreading into a really joyful celebration of *****'* life. As a family we can never thank him enough."
"Please will you pass on our love to Richard. Everyone was so pleased with the service and how he handled everything. I think he won a lot of fans that day."
"It was such a huge pity that Dad wasn't there to enjoy it as well. He would have laughed so much. I knew that I would cry, but I never thought that it would be tears of laughter......... You got it just right......... Are you sure you never met Dad?"
"I just wanted to say how grateful we are that you were able to take Mum's service. We had so many people asking about you afterwards. I think nobody quite knew what to expect but in the end it was a real success. K**** keeps asking when you are coming round to play Bunnies again!"

2We meet.
I shall then visit you in your home or any location that suits you, in order to discuss your service.
I arrive with no preconceptions or fixed ideas. The purpose of the meeting is to establish precisely what suits you, your family and, of course, the memory of the person that you have lost. I am happy to offer any guidance or suggestions, but always with an emphasis on your wishes and needs.
I am available 24/7 and will be happy to make additional visits if you require.

I then prepare your service, including any music, songs or readings, as well as incorporating time for family and friends who wish to participate. I shall be available to you and your family throughout, to advise and assist in any way I can. I shall also be in regular contact with your Funeral Director.
4The Service
On the day of the service, I shall check with your Funeral Director and any crematorium or other staff that all arrangements are in order. I shall also be available to you should you require any last minute changes and additions.
At the location chosen for your service I shall ensure that the arrangements go off smoothly, professionally and in accordance with our plans.
